Feature & Follow 01/31/2013

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!

Question of the Week brought to you by ME!
What is the first thing you would do if you woke up to find yourself in your favorite book?
Answer:

This question has so many different possibilities. I mean, the first question I have to ask myself is what is my favorite book? Wow, is that a hard question! So, let's say for arguments sake that my book/series is the Elemental Assassin by Jennifer Estep. I love Gin Blanco, so, if I woke up in her world, I would totally pee myself a little bit because I would be afraid that she would off my ass for totally obsessing over her! Then, I would run up to Bree and tell her to go out and find Donovan and kick his ass up and down the street for the way he treated Gin. Then, I would run up to Owen and slap him in the face so hard that I would probably break my hand also, for the way he's being a freaking baby! Then, I would sit down to a major dinner at the Pork Pit and gouge myself until I couldn't walk for a week!

That's my answer, and I'm sticking to it!
What would you do?
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!

Early Review - She Returns From War by Lee Collins

I am remorseful that the Cora Oglesby series is only two books long. I am remorseful that I did NOT read the first book "The Dead of Winter" before reading this one and will do my best to remedy that situation asap! I am saddened that the book wasn't told through the eyes of Cora Oglesby but rather Victoria Dawes. It was through Victoria's eyes that we arrived at our meeting with Cora and it was through Victoria's eyes that the series comes to an abrupt ending, again, after two books.

I loved that Collins wrote his book set not only in England, but Albuquerque, New Mexico where vampires and skin walkers make their home and a place I absolutely love. I liked the fact that Collins seemed to be genuinely respectful of the Navajo Indians that made New Mexico their home and not just ran amok all over them. I liked the western meets paranormal aspect of this book and I really didn't have any overt problems with Victoria as a main character even though at times I wanted to scream at her for being so naive and clumsy. She goes from a sheltered young woman from a well to do family who refuses to be married off and then watches her family get killed off by something similar to a werewolf (which we will never find out since the story ends here!), to a hunter in her own right thanks to Cora's teachings and the things that go bump in the night.

Still, this book takes place 4 years after the first book, and therefore I missed out on what happened to Cora's husband Ben. I need to put all the pieces together before I can fully appreciate the entire series. I need to know what made Cora give up the hunt for vampires, werewolves, and hellhounds and nearly turn her back on Victoria when she's threatened with being raped and brutalized. I need to know what made Cora turn into a drunk bar owner who resembles an old west sheriff who has saw too much and now doesn't care about anyone else's problems. Lastly, I need to know why Collins decided on the ending he did. It's actually a brave move on his part, but then again, it's only TWO BOOKS LONG!!!

In the long run, "She Returns From War" is a well paced and intriguing story that left me satisfied with my overall experience. I would HIGHLY recommend that if you are thinking about reading this series, go out and borrow or buy "The Dead of Winter' first! You won't be sorry that you did.

I'm giving this book 3 1/2 Gizmos not because I was disappointed in the book, but because it didn't satisfy my curiosity about Victoria's return home to England. I need another book!

Waiting on Wednesday 01/30/2013

"Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at “Breaking the Spine”, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This weeks selection is...The Ward by Jordana Frankel
Expected publication: April 30th 2013 by Katherine Tegen Books

I first heard about this book during Epic Reads ARC Party on January 23. I, of course,
immediately ran out and searched high and low for information about this book. Then,
suddenly, it was on Edelweiss! Some of you lucky dogs have already received this book.
I am hoping that I'll get approved!

This book sounds like something I enjoy. A Dystopian novel set in NYC and a spunky heroine!

Synopsis
Sixteen-year-old Ren is a daredevil mobile racer who will risk everything to survive in the Ward, what remains of a water-logged Manhattan. To save her sister, who is suffering from a deadly illness thought to be caused by years of pollution, Ren accepts a secret mission from the government: to search for a freshwater source in the Ward, with the hope of it leading to a cure.
However, she never expects that her search will lead to dangerous encounters with a passionate young scientist; a web of deceit and lies; and an earth-shattering mystery that’s lurking deep beneath the water’s rippling surface.
Jordana Frankel’s ambitious debut novel and the first in a two-book series, The Ward is arresting, cinematic, and thrilling—perfect for fans of Scott Westerfeld or Ann Aguirre

INTERVIEW with PERSEPHONE ALCMEDI
(*star of Linda Robertson’s Persephone Alcmedi series)

My guest is at ease across of me, sipping a cup of coffee with flavored creamer. She’s wearing a gray jersey knit tee-shirt under an open black over-shirt along with medium-blue jeans, and hiking boots. She’s slender and her no-frills appearance is as refreshing as it is attractive. Her long dark hair is straight, her gaze steady and unafraid. She smiles at me and it seems genuine
.
LR: So, Seph. Tell us a little about yourself.
Seph: Well, I write a newspaper column meant to help integrate wærewolves into society and reduce the fear most people have of them. I’m a modern witch, descended from a long, long line of witches traceable back to the earliest records from Greece, but I keep my pagan-ness on the down-low for the most part. Letting people know you’re a witch can be as troublesome as letting them know you’re a  wære. On a more personal note, my grandmother, who I call Nana, raised me. My mother dumped me with her and took off. I bought a farmhouse not too long ago, and then Nana moved in with me when she got kicked out of the retirement community she was living in—she’s a chain smoker. I now have a foster daughter, too. Her name is Beverley. Her mother was turned wærewolf in an attack that left her father dead. Her mother kenneled in my basement for a while and I babysat the kiddo on full moons. She got me up to speed on Disney movies. When her mother was murdered, Bev came to live with me.

LR: You work on a social cause you believe in and you have let your grandmother move in and taken on the responsibility of a child. Sounds like you’re pretty giving.
Seph: Aw, thanks. I don’t think of it as giving. It’s just that I see something that needs done and if I have the means to do it, then I figure it’s the right thing for me to do.

LR: You aren’t a wærewolf. Why are you so interested in their social cause?
Seph: I had this boyfriend in college. We were pretty serious. I helped him start a business, helping local wærewolves learn to protect themselves without actually hurting people. There was a lot of bullying going on in that area, a lot of hatred for wæres. His brother had been turned, and he used his knowledge of self-defense to help his brother and they realized it could be a real asset to lots of wæres, especially newer ones. Then he got secretive. He started keeping things from me and that led to our eventual break up.

LR: Hmmm, on that topic…since you’ve told us about the women in your life, what about the men?
Seph: (groans) I used to think that relationships happened when they were supposed to. Naturally. Slowly.

LR: Not anymore?
Seph: No way. I bought that farmhouse for me. I knew the cellar could be made into kennels that would help my friends out and we all worked together to put in the kennels. I wasn’t worried about having a man in my life. Wasn’t looking for one. But soon after the kennels went in, my friends started inviting other friends. It was convenient for them, meaning they didn’t have to travel all the way to Cleveland to kennel with the pack. Johnny was invited to kennel there by Erik, the husband of my best friend Celia. Johnny and Erik are in a band together, called Lycanthropia.

LR: And you two started going out?
Seph: It’s way more complicated than that, but yeah.

LR: Complicated? Elaborate?
Seph: Dating a wærewolf is not like dating a normal guy.

LR: Is dating a witch anything like dating a normal girl for a normal guy?
Seph: Touché. (laughs) I guess what I’m trying to say is, you have dreams when you find yourself falling for someone. Dreams that life will be easy, sweet, and happy. You live for their touch, their kiss, and when life has you down you seek comfort in their arms. You believe that person will be there for you no matter what. The circumstances of our destinies, both our individual fates and the combined one, creates situations that test us. (frowning hard) I mean, I am tested and I  learn things about myself that, while not changing who I am, it impacts me. A person can’t help growing, expanding when things like that happen. He’s not immune to any of this either. He gets tested, too. And then there are times when he tests me, or I test him, or life tests us as a couple. It’s hard to keep making forward progress with a nascent relationship in the best of conditions, let alone when the politics and prophesies of supernatural groups usually at odds with each other are converging in your living own room.

LR: That does sound tough. Thanks for chatting with me today.
Seph: My pleasure. Blessed Be.

Excerpt from SHATTERED CIRCLE

Liyliy, a vampire-harpy, had tried to kill me a few hours ago, and the struggle left me exhausted and sore. That was the reason I was still abed at nearly two in the afternoon. When my satellite phone blared the opening riffs of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Bark at the Moon,” it startled me, instantly reminding me about all the sore muscles I had.

Mid-reach, I stopped. That was Johnny’s ringtone.

He had tried to kill me, too.

My hand shook as my finger jabbed the Answer button.

“Hello?”

“Red . . . I’m so sorry.” Johnny’s voice was barely audible.

I sat up and deliberated whether to play deaf and repeat my “hello” as if I hadn’t heard him. I considered being a jerk and hanging up. I even contemplated ripping him a new one.

Instead, I remained silent.

Two days before, minutes after I’d performed the forced-change spell on him and his loyal pack mates, Johnny had attacked me. He’d always retained his manmind while transformed, but that last time he didn’t—he’d been pure animal. The only reason I was still among the living was because I’d pumped ley line energy into him like a human Taser.

“Red?”

He’d frightened me to my core. The unshakeable faith I’d had in him had been shattered by an emotional earthquake. Damage was done. My fear felt like betrayal.

But . . .

Could going through the forced-change spell repeatedly have an undesired effect?

No. I was sure the whole terrible incident could be pinned on the fact that my mother, Eris, had revoked the tattooed bindings she’d placed upon Johnny eight years ago. He suddenly had access to all the power and potential she’d locked away from him. That was surely a disorienting, difficult situation.

I’d helped him dig up the clues, helped him achieve that goal. Hell, I’d even been a part of the reversal spell. So some responsibility for the consequences was mine to bear.

“Persephone?”

He rarely used my full given name; he usually called me Red, as in Little Red Riding Hood to his Big Bad Wolf. Or Seph like nearly everyone else. I had to respond.

“I’m here.”

“Then say something.”

Pushing back the covers, I stood and began to pace. “I don’t know what to say.”

He paused. “Can you forgive me?”

I wasn’t sure.

Part of me said I couldn’t allow his attack to be a personal issue because of the fateful trio that Johnny, Menessos, and I forged by binding ourselves magically. The other part argued that no matter the circumstances, attempted murder was very damn personal.

It all happened because Johnny had surrendered to his destiny. His unique ability to transform at will made him the Domn Lup—king of the wærewolves. It was a position with power, prestige, and perks such as a Maserati Quattroporte. Johnny knew his royal place was unavoidable, but he’d fought it and hid from it a long time. He’d finally pushed forward because it was beneficial to our triple union, but kinghood was costing him his dream of being a rock star.

It had been my fear that he’d lose who he was in the course of this alliance of ours. More than ever, it seemed this fear was being borne out.

On the other corner of our triangle was Menessos. He now bore two witches marks—mine, of course. That made him my servant. When Heldridge, his former right-hand man, learned of my authority over Menessos, he tattled to the highest vampire authority, the Excelsior. To protect us against the personal grudge of the truthseeing vampire-harpies sent by VEIN to make formal inquiry, Menessos had allied himself at great personal expense with someone dangerous—a “nameless” guy I had aptly dubbed Creepy.

The secrets he’d wanted to hide from VEIN—secrets even I didn’t know—were apparently safe, but our little who-marked-whom secret was out. Menessos lost his haven and his status as Northeastern Quarterlord. Johnny had accepted great power and lost a lifelong dream. Menessos had lost great power and accepted serious personal risk. It didn’t seem fair.

And what about me?

In the last several weeks I’d learned that I was the longprophesied Lustrata, the Witches’ Messiah, She Who Walks Between Worlds, She Who Will Bring Balance, blah blah blah. As this news spread throughout the nonhuman communities, some scoffed and some believed. I was fine with the scoffers; it was the believers who were dangerous. They wanted to know if I truly possessed the power that accompanied those titles. Yeah, I was a magnet for nasties who either a) wanted me dead to be sure I didn’t have that power, or b) wanted to try to force me to wield power for their gain.

I guess I’d accepted the endless complications of my status and was well on my way to losing all scraps of naïveté.

At that thought, I stopped pacing. As I stared into the nothingness of a darkened corner, it felt like my innocence had slipped from my grasp and I was watching it skitter across the floor, waiting for it to come to a stop so I could reclaim it.

I wasn’t sure it was worth the effort to look for it. Or perhaps it would be impossible to find if I made the effort. Maybe it had rolled into some crack, never to be seen again.

I heard Johnny breathing through the phone.

It wasn’t Johnny who had rescued me last night.

When I defeated Liyliy, Menessos had been there to bring me to the haven. Sure, Menessos had a hand in creating the monster she now was. And it was he who had imprisoned her, creating her need for revenge. But it was me and my marks upon him that had brought her to Cleveland. When she pursued me from the haven—according to the Offerling I’d spoken to—Menessos had sent everyone out to search for me.

Had Johnny even known I was missing?

It was shitty of me to compare the two men in my life, but I couldn’t help myself. Though Menessos had drunk my blood numerous times, he hadn’t tried to kill me.

Yes he did! He nearly killed you not long after you first met.

We were strangers then, I argued with myself. Now, we know each other well.

Better, perhaps, than you should. . . .

Defiantly, I ignored my conscience’s scolding. I will not regret what I did last night. During the predawn hours, reeling from my encounter, I’d kissed Menessos.

Fine, but clearly you were able to forgive him.

That was true. Considering this, I felt hope. I sighed heavily into the phone. My whispered answer was, “In time.”

“There’s so much I need to tell you.” Johnny’s voice was raw, and the rev of an engine punctuated his words. I wondered where he was going. And I wondered if I should tell him about kissing the vampire.

It hadn’t been a peck.

When our lips had touched, I felt the promise and power of a more intimate union. He’d definitely felt it. It wasn’t only the power of the marks between us that had been kindled.

“I don’t know where to begin,” Johnny said.

His voice drew me out from my memory of a passionate moment with another man. Guilt swelled around my heart . . . but not remorse. What am I going to do?

Review - 'Til The World Ends by Julie Kagawa, Ann Aguirre and Karen Duvall

’Til the World Ends is an anthology that contains (3) novellas set in a post-apocalyptic world. Julie Kagawa penned the story Dawn of Eden. Ann Aguirre offers Thistle & Thorne which is a standalone, and Karen Duvall offers up Sun Storm

“Dawn of Eden” is considered the prequel to “The Immortal Rules” by Julie Kagawa. Instead of being a YA novel like THR, it’s told by adults. This prequel focuses on the lives of Kylie and Nathan Archer two 20 year olds who have somehow survived the Red Lung. Kylie, as a survivor of the Red Lung Disease, has tried to save as many humans affected by the Disease as she can while running a medical clinic and it’s a losing battle. When Nathan Archer arrives on the scene, things quickly change from bad to devastating and Kylie and Ben are forced to flee to Nathan’s hometown. There is a mysterious vampire known as K that makes an appearance and I was actually drawn to the mystery behind this person. Who is it? What was his crime against his people that has him on the run? I think we all know the identity of this vampire, but I shall not spoil it for anyone! I actually enjoyed the Immortal Rules very much and therefore I found this prequel/short story to be filled with promise and adventure as well. I loved Kylie who was trying to hold onto hope while trying to save as many people as she can from the Red Lung. As for Ben, he carries a whole bunch of baggage around with him. He carries secrets as to how the virus spread as well as a longing to go home and reconcile with his family before it’s too late. Since this is an adult themed novella, there are some sex scenes between Kylie and Ben which I’m surprised by since this is the supposed prequel to a YA series. (4/5 stars)

“Thistle & Thorne” by Ann Aguirre is the second novella in the anthology and a standalone with no attachments to any other series. This is a world where a catastrophic chemical spill turned the country into wasteland leaving fortresses for the Rich and slums for the poor. It is a world where people who live outside of the fortresses do whatever they can in order to survive day by day. The story focuses on Mari Thistle who comes from a family of thieves that goes back 300 years. In Mari’s case, she steals things in order to protect her brother and sister. After agreeing to work for the crime lord himself and failing at her mission, Mari finds herself hooking up with the dark and dangerous Thorne Goodman in an effort to stay alive and later helping Thorne take down the crime lord. I love the fact that although there isn’t any romance between the couple, there is a definite feel of electricity that flows between them. I guess you can call me a sucker for all things that have been written by Ann Aguirre. I loved the pacing of this book right from the start as well as the world building. I would love to see another story surrounding Mari and Thorne! This book has similar feelings to the Immortal Rules in that both female leads are forced into a hunting and gathering items in order to survive. Probably why I liked it so much! (4/5)

“Sun Storm” is the first novella that I’ve read by Karen Duvall since her Knight’s Curse series came out in early 2012. It’s the story about two individuals, Sarah Daggot and Ian Matthews, who have been changed by the Sun’s attack on the Earth. Called Kinetics because of their ability to predict when a storm will come, or the ability to control the weather, Sarah and Ian’s abilities may be the key to saving the planet from final destruction. Although I found aspects of this story appealing, the story was probably the weakest link in this anthology. I’m sorry to say that since Duvall has created a world where few people wander into the sun anymore for fear of turning up dead, or altered. The chemistry between Sarah and Ian was a given right from the onset. It usually is in a novella of this length. Sarah was definitely the stronger character in that she knew exactly what she needed to do in order to save people’s lives including her own father. Ian, on the other hand, is one of those characters who felt that the world owed him something so why should he care? Overall, this isn’t a bad novella by any stretch of the imagination, and I probably would have given it a higher mark it didn’t rush to the ending. (3/5)

Review - The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

“The Darkest Minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces.”

As a reader/reviewer, I normally go into a YA Dystopian novel with an open mind and a clear conscious hoping that I will be blown away by the story and the characters. I try NOT to read other people’s reviews until after I am finished reading the book for fear that I will be swayed into thinking I should have liked the book better than I actually did.

YA Dystopia has exploded over the past several years and “The Darkest Minds” is the latest in my exploration of that world piece by piece. “The Darkest Minds” did exactly what I had hoped it would do; it totally blew my mind right out of the water. I totally enjoyed the back story and, of course, the world of 16 year old Ruby Daly who is caught in the middle of a vicious world where children are now the enemies of the state.

The key to success in any Dystopian Novel is the world building. With “The Darkest Minds” Alexandra Bracken has created a world where children are targeted by a virus known as IAAN that either leaves them genetically altered forever or ends their lives before they get a chance to fully grow. The children then show signs of altered brain activity, IE, they have the ability for mind control, telekinesis, etc. This makes them extremely dangerous in the eyes of a corrupt and overbearing government who then rushes to judgment by implementing concentration camps for the children in order to save the adults from being manipulated.

As with other Dystopian novels, the world of the “Darkest Minds” is set in a future not far from now that leaves the country reeling and on the brink of destruction. People have lost the ability to find and gather food, they’ve lost their homes, and their jobs, and with children considered dangerous and in concentration camps, they end up fearing those they are supposed to take care of and love. There is also the presence of a group known as The Children’s League which is supposed to help free kids from their imprisonment and fight back against the tyranny of President Gray’s administration. Yet, not everything is as it seems.

As for the characters themselves, Ruby is a really interesting character and fully developed into someone I can relate to and follow from the first page to the last. She felt genuine in that her emotions or lack thereof, are realistic and not jumbled or faked. The way the story is told, you can’t really tell what happened to Ruby that she ended up in the concentration camp for 6 long years. You are told about the IAAN virus and the fact that adults lost their bloody minds when they sent their kids off to be “Rehabilitated.” It isn’t until she has help escaping and meets someone with the same abilities as she has that the truth finally comes out.

The only negative for me was the sloppy attempt at installing a 3-way love triangle into the storyline between one pretty decent character, and another who had ulterior motives for getting close to Ruby. For me, it just didn’t float my boat. I am a fully licensed hater of all things love triangles in anything except for contemporary romance. I think it takes away from the storyline and the enjoyment of the novel itself. Of course, I also realize that I am in the minority with my feelings on that subject.

I am totally missing out on the secondary characters like Liam, Chubs, and Suzume who Ruby stumbles upon and joins in an effort to find a sanctuary away from the PSF’s (Psychic Special Forces), Skip Tracers, and other PSI’s who work for the government. While other people will swoon over Liam the so called love interest, I found myself actually rooting for Chubs. There is something about a kid that has had everything stacked against him that really makes me want to know more about him and cheer for him to find a happy ending.

Alas, my poor followers, if you hate cliffhangers, you are going to really hate the ending to this book. I almost cried in agony when the book finally ended and things just didn’t end the way I expected them to. ::sigh:: Leaves me in pain until the sequel to this book is released in December of 2013.
